What’s in a name? Well, that depends on who you ask. And if you ask a new parent, a lot goes into a baby’s name! When I was pregnant with my first daughter, Amelia, we kept a running list of baby name contenders in our Notes app. We’d add a name, remove, add back, decide on a name, then decide we didn’t like the definition. Then we’d change our mind and change it again! This naming dance continued for nine months until we settled on Amelia, one of the top baby girl names of 2023, 2022, 2021, and 2020.

Inspiration for deciding on a baby name can come from anywhere. It can come from your favorite city, your heritage, a character in a book, or your biggest inspiration. To help you decide, we’ve compiled the Top 50 baby girl and baby boy names of 2024. Fun fact: Laura Modi, Founder of Bobbie, has one of her son’s names ranking at #24!

Top 5 Names in the Last 100 Years

For girls, the top 5 names in the past 100 years include Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Amelia and Sophia. For boys, the top 5 names in the past 100 years includes Liam, Noah, Oliver, James and Elijah.

It’s common for baby name trends to reflect pop culture, current events, and even social media trends. Our favorite name trends from Nameberry’s predictions for 2024 are the gilded baby names that bring joy and energy, like Aurelia, Goldie, and Marigold. We also love the neo-cowboy baby names, which take direct inspiration from the western TV show Yellowstone. Think Rip, Wilder, and Rhett.

Tips on naming your baby

I can appreciate how challenging this can feel, and it’s certainly a big decision, but as a mom of two, here are some tips on deciding a name for your baby:

  • Don’t overthink it! For my second daughter, we were inspired by the name Zoey from Peppa Pig. Inspo can strike from anywhere!
  • Be open to changing the name. You might think your baby looks like something completely different when they’re born, and that’s OK!

Whatever you decide, it will be the perfect name for your baby. We know it’s a tough choice, but there are so many good ones on this list and out in the world. We can’t wait to hear what you pick!
