There is literally no stage of motherhood that doesn’t leave us in need of a wellness weekend. For some of us it’s a wellness month! Postpartum moms need time to heal (mentally and physically), all moms need a break (with someone else doing the cooking) and girlfriends need a space to re-connect. When a friend of mine visited Hilton Head Health for her celebratory 40th birthday, I learned that this may be the place all of us moms need for a moment of silence, nourishing food, mental rejuvenation and physical fun.

What is Hilton Head Health?

Hilton Head Health (AKA H3) is a wellness spa and resort in Hilton Head South Carolina. Named the #3 Best Domestic Destination Spa by Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards, it offers different experiences based on your needs— whether it’s more of a wellness getaway, a healthy reset or a weight loss jump start. The goal is for guests to leave with invaluable tools to help manage stress, life balance, and happiness by reconnecting with nature, learning meditation and yoga, as well as indulging in spa services and delicious nourishing meals. Food is a key component here, which is interesting because it’s a known weight-loss facility. You eat beautiful food, learn the techniques to do so, while learning to eat more healthfully.

How to Get to Hilton Head Health

The Savannah Airport has the most flight options. They have a shuttle that runs to the wellness facility.

When to Visit HHH

Summer is very hot & humid so if you’re not used to that weather, try the off season instead (March-early June and September-November). Even in summer, though, it’s always a great time to be by the beach. The resort is only a 5 minute drive to the beach, making it a great place to start and end each day.

What Makes Hilton Head Health Unique

H3 is a truly restorative environment. It’s a space for women (mainly women, although there are some men and even couples that visit together) to have time and space to remember who they are. You can go alone or go with friends (or even your mom/relatives). You can make friends while there or spend time quietly rejuvenating. We met some incredible women on our visit; very smart, independent, successful women, all there for a re-charge. They made for very nice company and conversation, if/when you wanted it. It was great to see how some friends came together year after year, some people met during their time and made friendships and others came with their own moms as time to reconnect while living far apart.

As we found out, no two days are ever the same and you’re in the drivers seat! If you want to sleep in, you can. If you want to go to bed at 8pm and wake up for the sunrise beach walk, you can. It’s a choose your own adventure getaway that leaves  you feeling renewed and refreshed. This is what inspires people to visit H3 for so many reasons. There were people staying for one month (or even months), yet many people were there for the week-long LivingWell or ReNew programs. These are recommended for pregnant women as well as postpartum moms (if/when they can take a few days away)— and all moms who need time to restore!

Hilton Head Health for Postpartum Moms

Postpartum moms love visiting Hilton Head Health because it’s time for just you. In other countries, postpartum moms commonly visit facilities to rest, physically and mentally, unlike the US. While postpartum moms visit, they can do nothing or everything without the distraction of family. It’s a few days that will feel like an eternity (in the best possible way) where you get to decide what, when and where. It’s just for you.

When you can take a few days, maybe towards the end of that first year, this is the chance to give yourself the gift of self. It’s a great way to relax, re-energize and even to make a plan (with experts if you’d like) for when you get back home on how you’re going to take time for yourself more routinely.

Where do you Sleep at Hilton Head Health?

The lovely Sweetgrass Inn at Hilton Head Health has 30 guest rooms, a game room & theater room overlooking the pool. The inn has two gorgeous, large front porches overlooking the pool. Guests often congregate here, away from the sun, to enjoy the quiet.

The Spa at Hilton Head Health

The Indigo Spa is not a trend-driven spa where the latest wellness trend drives the experience. H3 is rooted in longevity. There are pre-natal massages and facials along with other massages as well as manicures/pedicures and body treatments.

The Food at HHH

All meals follow a Mediterranean diet. The food here is absolutely delicious and extremely filling (we may have ate more here than at home). They have a FitBite snack stand available all day, great for between workouts.

If you can, join the chef for a special meal. He does cooking sessions as well as full-course meals where you can learn about healthful meal prep along with out-of-the box substitutions for sugar, dairy and carbs. The chocolate mousse (made with silken tofu, coffee and Cocowhip) was a favorite of all the guests!

Top 10 Things to do at Hilton Head Health

Hilton Head Health guests can choose from more than 150 classes and lectures each week. The choices are very personal and you can do as many or as few as you’d like. Visitors can participate in cooking classes, spa treatments, yoga, meditation, and a number of experiences in nature including daily beach walks, seasonal SUP and kayaking, beach yoga, bike rides and more. Our favorites include:

Sunrise Beach Walk (7am each morning-Not to be missed!)

Beach Yoga (There’s nothing like doing downward dog facing the ocean!)

Massage at Indigo Spa

Chef’s Table multi course dinner

TRX class

Drums Alive class (trust us!)

Meditation

Pool classes (Pool yoga was new and interesting to me!)

Lectures (Especially the one on dining out/portion control, and stress management)

Visitng H3

The most important thing at Hilton Head Health is to try SOMETHING that relaxes you (beach yoga) or something you’ve never tried before (TRX!). This is a judgment free resort, and you might find a new exercise that you really enjoy/were too intimidated to try at home. Here you can feel comfortable trying it, as you’re surrounded by comfort.

At H3 we spent a lot of time eating well, reading and walking the beach. You are genuinely cared for, and taken care of, by the team. The best tip they share is to listen to your body— some days you might just want to walk the beach all day, others you might take back to back fitness classes. It’s your trip! Our 4 days felt truly restorative, although you may prefer the more popular week long options.

One mom we met here said, “A visit to H3 was the best gift I’ve ever received”.
